Pope calls for ‘divine gift of peace’in meeting with Lebanon’s Christian and Muslim leaders

Pope Leo XIV celebrated Lebanon’s tradition of interfaith coexistence Monday as a beacon of hope for a conflict-torn region, calling for “the divine gift of peace” in a meeting with the country’s Christian and Muslim religious leaders.

Leo received a great welcome from Lebanon’s spiritual leaders on his first day of visit, where billboards bearing his image dotted highways around the capital, Beirut, with thousands of ordinary Lebanese braving the steady rain in the morning to line his motorcade route.

The interfaith meeting in Martyr’s Square in Beirut had Lebanon’s Christian patriarchs and Sunni, Shiite, and Druze spiritual leaders gathered under a tent.

After listening to hymns and readings from the Bible and Quran, Leo praised Lebanon’s tradition of religious tolerance as a beacon for “the divine gift of peace” in the region.

“In an age when coexistence can seem like a distant dream, the people of Lebanon, while embracing different religions, stand as a powerful reminder that fear, distrust and prejudice do not have the final word, and that unity, reconciliation, and peace are possible,” he said.

Pope Leo’s message emphasised how crucial Lebanon and its Christian population are to the Catholic Church, a place that St. John Paul II famously said was more than just a country but a message of freedom to the rest of the world. At the end of the event, the spiritual leaders planted an olive sapling as a symbol of peace.

While Lebanon is now often cited as a model of religious coexistence, it hasn’t always been that way. The country’s civil war from 1975 to 1990 was largely fought along sectarian lines.

A visit at a tense time

The Pontiff’s visit comes at a newly tenuous time for the tiny Mediterranean country after years of conflict, economic crises and political deadlock, punctuated by the 2020 Beirut port blast. At a time of conflict in Gaza and worsening political tensions in Lebanon, Leo’s visit has been welcomed by the Lebanese as a sign of hope.

“We, as Lebanese, need this visit after all the wars, crises and despair that we have lived through,” said the Rev. Youssef Nasr, the secretary-general of Catholic Schools in Lebanon. “The pope’s visit gives a new push to the Lebanese to rise and cling to their country.”

More recently, Lebanon has been deeply divided over calls for Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group and political party, to disarm after fighting a war with Israel last year that left the country deeply damaged. Despite a ceasefire, Israel has carried out almost daily airstrikes targeting Hezbollah members.

The Grand Sunni Muslim Mufti of Lebanon, Abdul-Latif Derian, welcomed Leo at the interfaith event and recalled the good relations forged by his predecessor, Pope Francis. He cited the 2019 joint statement on human fraternity signed by Francis and the grand imam of Al-Azhar, the seat of Sunni learning in Cairo, Sheikh Ahmad al-Tayeb.

“Lebanon is the land of this message,” Derian said.

A plea for Christians to stay

Today, Christians make up around a third of Lebanon’s 5 million people, giving the small nation on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean the largest percentage of Christians in the Middle East.

A power-sharing agreement in place since independence from France calls for the president to be a Maronite Christian, making Lebanon the only Arab country with a Christian head of state

The Vatican sees Christian presence as a bulwark for the church in the region.

Despite their exodus following the country’s civil war, Lebanese Christians have endured in their ancestral homeland.

The rise of the Islamic State Group, which was defeated in 2019 after losing its last stronghold in Syria, forced Christians from Iraq and Syria to flee in large numbers.

The White House said Monday that a Navy admiral acted “within his authority and the law” when he ordered a second, follow-up strike on an alleged drug boat in the Caribbean Sea in a September US military operation that has come under bipartisan scrutiny.

According to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, Defense Secretary Hegseth authorised Admiral Bradley to conduct these kinetic strikes.

“Admiral Bradley worked well within his authority and the law, directing the engagement to ensure the boat was destroyed and the threat to the United States of America was eliminated.

Leavitt, in her comments to reporters, did not dispute a Washington Post report that there were survivors after the initial strike.

Her explanation came after a Washington Post report detailing the attack sparked controversy, and President Donald Trump said he “wouldn’t have wanted that—not a second strike” when asked about the incident.

US lawmakers cited a published report that Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a verbal order for a second strike that killed survivors on the boat.

Navy Vice Adm. Frank “Mitch” Bradley, who Leavitt said ordered the second strike, is expected to provide a classified briefing Thursday to lawmakers overseeing the military.

Late Monday, Hegseth posted: “Admiral Mitch Bradley is an American hero, a true professional, and has my 100% support. I stand by him and the combat decisions he has made — on the September 2 mission and all others since.”

A month after the strike, Bradley was promoted from commander of Joint Special Operations Command to commander of US Special Operations Command.

Congress wants answers

Concern over the Trump administration’s military strikes against the alleged drug-smuggling boats has been building in Congress.

Still, details of this follow-on strike stunned many lawmakers from both parties and generated stark questions about the legality of the attacks and the overall strategy in the region, and particularly toward Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune on Monday broadly defended the operations, echoing the Trump administration’s position that they’re necessary to stem the flow of illegal narcotics into the United States.

While Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called Hegseth a “national embarrassment” over his response to critics. Schumer demanded that Hegseth release the video of the strike and testify under oath about what happened.

Republican Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, pledged that his panel’s investigation would be “done by the numbers.”

“We’ll find out the ground truth,” he said, adding that the ramifications of the report were “serious charges.”

Maduro reacts

Meanwhile, Trump met later Monday with his national security team to discuss the ongoing operations and potential next steps against Venezuela.

The Trump administration says the strikes are aimed at drug cartels, some of which it claims are controlled by Maduro. Trump is also weighing whether to carry out strikes on the Venezuelan mainland.

Trump confirmed Sunday that he had recently spoken by phone with Maduro but declined to detail the conversation.

Speaking to supporters in Caracas on Monday, Maduro said US pressure has “tested” the country, but Venezuelans are ready “to defend it and lead it to the path of peace.”

“We have lived through 22 weeks of aggression that can only be described as psychological terrorism,” Maduro said.

The controversial September strike was one in a series carried out by the US military in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean, as Trump ordered the buildup of a fleet of warships near Venezuela, including the largest US aircraft carrier.

More than 80 people have been killed in the strikes.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet US special envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow on Tuesday, after the White House said it was “very optimistic” about reaching a deal to end the Ukraine war.

US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who has acted as an outside adviser in diplomatic talks, is also expected to attend.

The summit comes after two days of negotiations in Florida between Ukrainian and US officials, including Witkoff and Kushner, aimed at refining a US-backed peace plan which had been viewed as favourable to Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the talks as “constructive”, but said there are “some tough issues that still have to be worked through”.

Speaking after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday, Zelensky said Kyiv’s priorities in peace talks were maintaining Ukraine’s sovereignty and securing strong security guarantees.

Zelensky said the “territorial issue is the most difficult” element of the peace deal, with the Kremlin continuing to push for Ukraine to cede territory in the east which it still controls – something Kyiv has long-maintained it will never do.

Witkoff also held talks with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Zelensky and Ukraine’s new chief negotiator Rustem Umerov, while several key European leaders virtually joined the Zelensky-Macron meeting.

Speaking on Monday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the draft peace deal had “been very much refined”, adding: “I think the administration feels very optimistic.”

She continued: “But as for the details, I will let the negotiators negotiate. But we do feel quite good, and we’re hopeful that this war can finally come to an end.”

Last week, Putin said he had seen a draft peace plan proposed by the US, and that it could become the “basis” for a future agreement to end the war.

However, Kremlin officials later cast doubt over whether it would accept the proposal after Kyiv and European allies said they had secured changes to it.

The initial US-Russia draft peace plan circulated in November sparked consternation in Kyiv and around Europe.

As well as being heavily slanted towards Moscow’s demands, it also dictated how several billion in frozen Russian assets currently held in European financial institutions should be invested, as well as setting the terms for Ukrainian market access in Europe.

Speaking on Monday, Macron said there was currently “no finalised peace plan to speak of”, and insisted that any such proposal could only be worked out with input from Ukraine and Europe.

Macron said the question of territorial concessions could “only be finalised by President Zelensky”, and pointed out that questions around frozen Russian assets, security guarantees, and Ukraine’s accession to the EU needed to involve European nations.

The French leader also praised efforts by the Trump administration to end the conflict, which began in 2014 with Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea, followed by a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, said this week could be “pivotal”, but that Moscow only wanted to negotiate “with those who are just offering them something on top of what they already have”.

She continued: “I’m afraid all the pressure will be put on the weaker side because that is the easier way to stop this war when Ukraine surrenders… but this is not in anybody’s interest.”

In recent months Moscow has at times appeared to engage with US attempts to media an agreement to end the war, but several of its demands directly counter Ukraine’s sovereignty and are seen as unacceptable by Kyiv.

While the question of territory is the major sticking point, the issue of security guarantees for Kyiv has also proved contentious.

Kyiv and its European partners are keen for Ukraine to be given security guarantees – such as Nato membership – that would protect it from being attacked again.

But Russia vehemently opposes this and Trump has also ruled out allowing Ukraine to join the military alliance.

The talks in Moscow on Tuesday come as Russian officials claimed to have captured the key strategic towns of Pokrovsk – known in Russian as Krasnoarmeysk – and Vovshansk in eastern Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials have made no acknowledgement that either city has fallen to Russia.

According to open-source intelligence projects that consistently monitor the front lines of the war, neither Vovshansk nor Pokrovsk have yet been fully captured by the Russian army.
