Man charged in connection with death of Kerry farmer Michael Gaine

A man, aged in his 50s, has been charged in connection with the investigation into the disappearance and murder of Michael Gaine.

The 56-year-old County Kerry farmer had been missing for more than eight weeks when remains found on his farm, near Kenmare, were identified in May 2025.

It was initially treated as a missing persons case before it was upgraded to a homicide.

The man who was charged in connection with this investigation will appear before a sitting of Tralee District Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Gaine, a sheep and cattle farmer, was reported missing from his home near Kenmare on 21 March 2025.

He was last seen in the County Kerry town the previous day.

He lived in the remote Carrig East area, close to the Molls Gap beauty spot, along the renowned Ring of Kerry.

Hundreds of people joined searches of his farm and a number of lakes, streams and rivers nearby were also searched.

Human tissue found at Mr Gaine’s farm in May 2025 was later confirmed to be his.
