Three people were stabbed and wounded at a train station in northern Switzerland on Thursday morning.

The incident took place at Winterthur train station shortly after 8:30 am, with the suspected attacker arrested at the scene.

The three injured people, aged 28, 43 and 52, were taken to hospital for treatment.

Speaking at a press conference later on Thursday, Marius Weyermann, the commander of the Zurich Cantonal Police, said the suspect was a 31-year-old dual Swiss-Turkish national from the local area who was already known to authorities.

The man had been in and out of a psychiatric clinic in the days leading up to the incident at Winterthur train station after having reported himself to police on 25 May, Weyermann said.

He ultimately checked out of the clinic after a doctor determined he no longer posed a threat, he added.

Swiss public broadcaster Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen (SRF) said its research showed the man had links to radical Islamism.

Authorities said the 31-year-old had previously been a suspect in an investigation into Winterthur’s An’Nur mosque, which faced allegations of promoting radicalism before later closing down. Leaders at the mosque had reportedly denied the claims.

Mario Fehr, the director of security for the Canton of Zurich, referred to Thursday’s incident as a “terrorist attack”.

Swiss newspaper Blick earlier shared video footage showing a man running out of the train station and appearing to shout “Allahu akbar”.

An investigation into the attack is ongoing.
